Update 09/2024: Local Environment

Learning Plan Status Update

As I mentioned in passing in my April update, I started a new job late last year (not in technology; programming is more of a very useful hobby than something I do professionally at the moment). That’s kept me busy but also changed my focus to some extent.

I did finish the JavaScript course I’d been working on in late June/early July. After that, though, I went down a different rabbit hole and haven’t emerged from it as yet.

Docker has never worked properly on my Windows 11 machine, even after trying multiple things and asking for advice in a forum. Shout-out to SitePoint user rpkamp, who commented, “Docker works perfectly on any OS. So long as that OS is Linux”. I had started using Laragon, which works well, but then I got interested in setting up my own environment from scratch.

Sooooo I started learning Apache and figuring out how to make my own local development environment from scratch. I’ve just finally gotten a setup I really like, and I plan to write it up as a proper tutorial soon.

As for what’s next…I haven’t really decided! I’ve got a domain I bought a while back but haven’t made a site for. I could go back to working on my organization tool. I also have more courses than I want to admit sitting in my Udemy queue. (I don’t have a problem, I swear!) And I still want to learn C and some other older languages at some point. For now, I think the next steps are writing up tutorials on what I learned about setting up a local environment to really solidify it in my head.
